Bogota Weather is classified as subtropical highland. Because of the city’s geographical position - on the east of the Savannah of Bogotá, located on a mountain rimmed plateau in the Andes Mountains – Bogota Weather can be divided into two alternating seasons: a arid season and a drizzly season.  However, weather in Bogota retains a certain sense of unpredictably, its patterns varying greatly from year to year.

Part of Colombia lies to the north of the equator and part of it to the south of the equator, with Bogota situated on the north side of the country. The closer to the equator, the hotter, and more tropical the weather can be. As is often the case for regions of higher elevation, Bogota is much more variable.

Due to “El Nino” and “La Nina,” weather in Bogota can go through vast changes from one year to the next being. While conditions tend to be rather wet one year, the following weather turns on its head becoming relatively dry, and in the process making Bogotá weather unpredictable. Sunny mornings can develop into a severe thunderstorm in the afternoon, commonly referred as "Sol de Lluvia" literally meaning "Rainy Sun".

Bogota receives most of its precipitation during the summer months, even though it can rain during any month of the year. Light rainfall usually falls in the morning or evening clearing the air of pollution and giving it a pleasant fresh smell.

Primarily, April, May September, October, and November, are typified by overcast days with low laying clouds and some winds, bringing maximum temperatures of 18 °C and lows of 7 °C. Generally these months have the highest amounts of rainfall, with June and July also registering high levels of precipitation. The month of August is characterized by sunny weather patterns and high winds. December, January, and February are customarily the months when it rains the least.

Hailstorms are a common feature of Bogota Weather during the rainy season, especially during October when their strength and ferocity increase rapidly. Temperatures during the day are mildly cool; nights can get moderately cold due to the city’s mild winds in the evenings all year round.

The coolest nights occur in January, with an average of 5.4 °C in the city; temperatures can fall below freezing in the nearby towns causing frost and fog in the early morning.
Bogotá weather is at its best almost certainly during the months of December, January, and February, March is the warmest month with a maximum of19.7 °C. These are the months when Bogota Weather is at its most pleasant; however, there is no assurance of either completely fine or completely appalling weather at any point throughout the year.

If you fly in from the lowlands you may feel slightly lightheaded, so it is wise not be too active for the first 24-48 hours. You may even become exhausted easily, this is normal until you adjust to the higher altitude.
